Open-source software is usually built in an open, collaborative way by many different contributors. These projects tend to embrace transparency, open exchange, free participation, rapid prototyping, and community-driven development.
All open-source licenses let anyone study, modify, and redistribute the source code. Some licenses go further and require that any modified code is also published under the same terms. The opposite approach is closed-source software, where the code is kept private, and only its creator has the right to change or distribute it.
Licenses generally fall into two broad groups.
More broadly, the effort to make most software available under open-source licenses is known as the open-source software movement. Its goals include improving technology through high-quality code produced cooperatively by like-minded people who voluntarily write and share their work.
Open code is not automatically free of bugs or security flaws, so the value of open-source software depends on how actively it is reviewed and maintained.
In practice, popular crypto protocols attract many independent reviewers, security researchers, and volunteer contributors who study the code, report problems, and propose improvements. This ongoing scrutiny is one reason many people consider transparency an important quality for the software that secures a network and its users' funds.
