🚨 A $320M Bitcoin security incident just put Liquid Network under serious pressure — but the story has taken an unusual turn.

Around 4,000 BTC, worth roughly $320 million, was withdrawn from Liquid Network’s federation wallet after a security vulnerability was exploited.

Liquid temporarily paused network activity while the issue was investigated. The withdrawal was processed through SideSwap’s peg-out system, although Liquid said the authorization key itself was not compromised.

The party behind the withdrawal described itself as a white-hat hacker and indicated the funds could be returned after the vulnerability was fixed.

That has now partly happened.

After Blockstream said its bridge nodes had been patched, roughly 3,400 BTC — about 85% of the withdrawn amount — was returned, while nearly 600 BTC remained with the attacker at the latest reported update.

Why does this matter?

The incident highlights how security risks can emerge in the infrastructure connecting Bitcoin with sidechains and settlement systems — even without Bitcoin’s base network itself being compromised.

The next thing to watch is whether the remaining BTC is returned and what the final technical investigation reveals about the vulnerability.

La sécurité dans l’écosystème des cryptomonnaies ne dépend pas uniquement de la protection de votre phrase de récupération. Elle commence également par la fiabilité du micrologiciel (firmware) de votre portefeuille.

Une vulnérabilité identifiée dans une ancienne version de micrologiciel publiée en mars 2021 a permis à des attaquants de compromettre des portefeuilles dont les clés privées avaient été générées avec un hasard logiciel insuffisamment robuste.

📊 Les chiffres sont préoccupants :

• ⚠️ Plus de 4 500 portefeuilles affectés.
• 💰 Environ 1 367 BTC dérobés, soit près de 89 millions de dollars.
• 🔍 Les attaquants poursuivent leurs analyses en ciblant désormais même les portefeuilles contenant de faibles montants.

Le problème provient de l’utilisation d’un générateur de hasard logiciel prévisible lors de la création de la phrase de récupération (seed), au lieu d’une source de hasard matériel plus sécurisée.

Comment protéger vos actifs ?

✅ Maintenez votre portefeuille avec la dernière version officielle du micrologiciel.
✅ Téléchargez toujours les mises à jour depuis le site officiel du fabricant.
✅ Si votre portefeuille a été initialisé avec un ancien micrologiciel concerné, envisagez de transférer vos fonds vers un nouveau portefeuille créé après la mise à jour.
✅ Ne communiquez jamais votre phrase de récupération (seed), quelles que soient les circonstances.
