If you’re new to crypto, two terms you’ll come across very quickly are Bitcoin and Altcoins.
But what’s the difference?
🟡 Bitcoin
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency. It was designed as a decentralized digital currency that enables peer-to-peer transactions without relying on a central authority.
Today, Bitcoin remains the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and has a more established track record than most other crypto assets.
🔵 So, what are Altcoins?
Altcoin is a broad term for any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.
The name comes from “alternative coin.”
Altcoins aren’t all built for the same purpose. They can differ in their technology, design, supply, and use cases.
Some are used to power blockchain networks, while others can support applications, decentralized services, payments, or other functions within the crypto ecosystem.
The simple way to remember it:
Bitcoin = the first cryptocurrency
Altcoins = cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin
And one important point:
“Altcoin” doesn’t automatically mean better or worse.
It’s simply a broad category.
Before trying to understand an asset, start by asking:
What is it designed to do?
That question will become more important as we continue building the basics. 👀
