Japan is exploring how tokenized Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) could be used as collateral in financial transactions, including potential repo-market applications involving blockchain-based settlement and digital cash.
🔍 WHAT’S BEING STUDIED?
A Japanese financial-industry working group is examining the use of on-chain JGB rights and tokenized government bonds as collateral, with stablecoins potentially serving as the cash leg of repo transactions.
The study is expected to provide a report in October.
🏦 JAPAN’S BROADER TOKENIZATION TEST
Japan is also conducting experiments involving major financial institutions and technology providers, including Mizuho, Nomura, JSCC and Digital Asset, focused on blockchain-based management of JGB collateral.
📈 WHY JGBs MATTER
Japanese government bonds represent one of the world’s major fixed-income markets. At the same time, Japan’s long-term bond yields have risen sharply, making the efficiency of collateral management an increasingly important market topic.

🌐 Faster, programmable financial infrastructure
The key question is whether tokenization can improve collateral mobility, settlement efficiency and programmability while preserving liquidity, legal certainty and the existing economic functions of JGB markets.
⚠️ Important: These are experiments and studies, not evidence that Japan is moving the entire JGB market onto blockchain. The eventual scale and design will depend on regulatory, legal, liquidity and market-structure considerations.
If successful, tokenized government bonds could become an important part of the broader real-world-asset (RWA) and institutional blockchain infrastructure narrative.
