August: The Deadliest Month for Crypto in 2025?
August once again highlighted the vulnerability of exchanges, DeFi platforms, and individual investors. While hacks have plagued the industry since its inception, the scale and frequency of recent incidents point to a new escalation.
The most high-profile theft of the month occurred on August 19, when a Bitcoin holder became the victim of a social engineering attack. Criminals impersonated hardware wallet support agents, tricking the user into disclosing sensitive credentials.
The result: 783 $BTC — worth $91.4 million at the time — was drained from the victim’s wallet. The stolen coins were swiftly routed through Wasabi Wallet, a privacy-focused mixing tool designed to obscure transaction trails.
This single incident accounted for more than half of all funds lost in August, making it one of the largest individual thefts in 2025 so far.
BtcTurk Breach: Turkey’s Largest Exchange Targeted
While individuals remain vulnerable, exchanges also faced devastating blows. BtcTurk, Turkey’s biggest crypto exchange, reported losses estimated between $48 million and $54 million after hackers gained access to hot-wallet keys.
Hot wallets, which remain connected to the internet for liquidity purposes, are frequent targets of cybercriminals. Although exchanges often maintain insurance funds or emergency reserves, such breaches continue to erode public confidence in centralized platforms.
