What Is Blockchain Finality? 🔐🔗
When is a blockchain transaction truly settled?
That depends on the network's finality model.
1️⃣ Transaction Is Broadcast
A transaction enters the network and is verified by nodes.
2️⃣ Transaction Enters a Block
A valid transaction is included in a proposed block.
3️⃣ The Block Gains Confirmation
As the network accepts the block, confidence that the transaction will remain in the chain increases.
4️⃣ Finality Is Reached
Finality means the network has reached a point where reversing or changing the accepted history becomes extremely difficult—or, in some protocols, economically or cryptographically constrained by the consensus rules.
⚡ Two Common Models
Probabilistic Finality
More confirmations generally increase confidence that a transaction won't be reversed.
Deterministic / Economic Finality
The protocol can define conditions under which an accepted block is considered finalized, with reversal requiring extraordinary protocol-level circumstances.
🧠 Key Idea
Confirmation ≠ Finality
A confirmation shows that a transaction is included in an accepted block.
Finality describes the stronger assurance that the blockchain's consensus will continue treating that history as settled.
Different blockchains achieve finality in different ways.
