The XRP Ledger (XRPL) Foundation has found itself at the center of a controversy regarding the size of a bug bounty reward. A hacker who discovered a critical "infinite $XRP minting" vulnerability was paid only $250,000—despite the XRPL treasury being valued in the billions of dollars.

A vulnerability dating back to 2015: Researchers Cayden Liao and Veria AI discovered an integer overflow bug in the XRPL payment engine. It allowed XRP to be purchased at an artificially low price, with the difference created literally "out of thin air."
Scale of the threat: $XRP has a hard cap of 100 billion coins and a market capitalization exceeding $86 billion. The vulnerability could have completely collapsed the ecosystem.
