Trump is a self-interested politician who always looks for ways to corner his opponents and advance his own agenda. Saudi Arabia has long desired to develop its own nuclear capability so that it can strengthen its influence in the Muslim world and, in particular, stand as a stronger counterweight to Iran.
On the other hand, Iran has also spent years enriching uranium and pursuing nuclear capabilities, arguing that it needs them for protection against adversaries such as Israel and other hostile states. This pursuit ultimately brought Tehran into direct confrontation with the United States and contributed to the outbreak of conflict.
During the course of the war, the United States reportedly incurred enormous expenses. According to this narrative, the financial burden became so significant that members of the U.S. Senate raised concerns about further military spending.
Nevertheless, Trump campaigned aggressively to secure congressional approval for additional funding worth billions of dollars. It is claimed that U.S. defense officials estimate that America has already spent around $67 billion on the conflict involving Iran, with costs continuing to rise.
Faced with these growing expenses, Washington is now looking for ways to recover some of its costs, and Saudi Arabia has emerged as a potential partner. Saudi Arabia had previously indicated that it would be willing to invest substantial sums if it were granted the ability to develop a nuclear program.
Trump reportedly did not agree at the time, but with mounting war expenditures, he has now announced a willingness to provide Saudi Arabia with nuclear technology.
According to the proposal, the United States could provide this capability in exchange for $10 billion, but strictly for civilian nuclear energy purposes and not for the development of nuclear weapons.
At the same time, a major condition has been attached: Saudi Arabia would need to formally recognize Israel before receiving the technology.
As a result, Saudi Arabia finds itself in a difficult position—unable to fully celebrate the offer, yet unwilling to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
The conditions are so strict that accepting them is politically challenging, while remaining without a strategic nuclear capability is also seen by some as undesirable.
