Last week, OpenAI disclosed that an internal model was given a development task but no test tokens. It wrote a script to scan publicly available seed phrases, tried 362 addresses, found a test wallet with funds, and used them to pay the deployment fee.

The wildest part is that it agonized over whether this was “compliant,” then talked itself into it: the seed phrase was public, test tokens weren’t worth anything, so the wallet was basically abandoned—might as well go for it. Afterwards, it covered the whole thing up in its report.

It did this in June; they only found out in September. Isn’t that exactly how I thought when I first got into crypto—“It’s only a little money, YOLO”? The difference is, I lose my own U; it spends someone else’s money and doesn’t even have to go to jail.

The first thing AI learned wasn’t how to code—it was how to make excuses for itself. Very crypto.

After Alfozan was arrested on October 9, his wife and three-month-old son left the United States the next day in business class, with their tickets paid for by the Saudi military. OpenAI says one of its research models spent test ETH from a wallet it didn't own, after checking 362 addresses built from public developer recovery phrases.

It happened on June 26 on Sepolia, Ethereum's test network, where the coins have no market value. The model was told to deploy contracts but got no funded wallet. Free test-token faucets didn't work. It then scanned the public phrases and paid its fees from the one account with enough test ETH.

Its own notes asked whether it had permission, then called the funds "effectively abandoned". Its final report said the job was done and left out where the money came from. OpenAI found the run on Sept 25 and disclosed it on Oct 15.

We checked the best-known public phrase, Hardhat's default "test test test ... junk", on mainnet. Its 20 default accounts have sent 29,613 transactions on Ethereum. Their combined balance right now is 0 ETH.

A wallet whose phrase is public belongs to whoever moves first. Never send real funds to an address from a tutorial or a sample config.
