A strategy can show positive results and still not provide sufficient evidence to support a conclusion.
The first point is sample size. A few operations can produce a favorable sequence simply through random variation. As the number of observations increases, it becomes more possible to assess whether the observed behavior is consistent.
But quantity doesn’t solve everything. The quality of the data also matters. It’s necessary to check the analyzed period, costs, execution rules, different market conditions, and possible distortions in the test.

A very positive result over a few trades may seem convincing, but a small sample carries more uncertainty.
Five trades, for example, can produce an exceptional sequence by chance. That doesn’t mean the same behavior will be observed when the strategy is applied many times and under different market conditions.
Increasing the number of observations helps you better see the distribution of results, the frequency of wins and losses, and the strategy’s natural variability. A larger sample doesn’t guarantee a better outcome, but it can provide a broader view of the observed behavior.

An exceptional result can attract attention, but a single peak does not prove that a strategy is consistent.
In the market, there is an important difference between achieving an extreme result and building a process that can repeat acceptable results across different periods.
A strategy may show a large gain at a given moment and, at the same time, depend on a specific condition that may not happen again. When we analyze a longer sequence of trades, periods, and scenarios, we can better observe the process’s stability.

Storing millions of records does not, by itself, mean you have a foundation capable of producing reliable conclusions.
Incomplete data, recording errors, selection biases, outdated information, and inconsistencies can remain present even when the sample is huge. In that case, increasing the quantity only expands the volume of the problem.
A more solid analysis starts with the quality of the information. It’s important to know the source of the data, check its integrity, understand how it was collected, and maintain a clear methodology for processing it.

A strategy needs clear rules so that its results can be analyzed consistently.
When parameters, criteria, or conditions are changed during testing, the result no longer represents exactly the same method. This makes it difficult to know whether the performance came from the original strategy or from the changes made along the way.
This problem appears frequently when someone adjusts a strategy after observing certain results and then tests again using the new rules. The result may seem better, but the comparison is no longer happening under the same conditions.
