One digital dollar, 15+ blockchains. What is USDC, and why do crypto users keep it in their wallets? 🤔
USDC is one of the first things I explain to newcomers. Here's the plain version:
• USDC is a stablecoin built to track the US dollar, about $1 per token. It's issued by Circle, a regulated company, not by a blockchain community.
• It's backed by reserves. Circle says the reserves are held separately from its operating funds, most of them in an SEC-registered government money market fund, with monthly third-party assurance that reserves exceed the USDC in circulation.
• People use it to avoid cashing out. They move between crypto assets, park value during volatile markets, send money across borders at any hour, and use it in DeFi apps.
USDC isn't risk-free. It isn't a bank deposit, and the $1 peg isn't an absolute guarantee. Issuer, reserve, platform, and regulatory risks all matter. US stablecoin rules under the GENIUS Act are scheduled to take effect in January 2027.
What I've learned is that USDC's real value is utility. Bitcoin's price can swing, but a stablecoin lets you use blockchain speed without that volatility. Still, "stable" depends on trusting the issuer, so read the reserve reports.
Question: Have you used a stablecoin yet? If so, was it for trading, sending money, or saving, or are you still unsure how it works?
Bitcoin's whitepaper turns 18 this Saturday. 🎂 But what exactly is Bitcoin?
Here's the simple version:
🟠 No central boss. Bitcoin lets people send digital money without relying on a bank to process every payment. Computers around the world help maintain a shared public record called the blockchain.
🟠 A limit of 21 million. Bitcoin's rules cap its supply at 21 million coins. That's one reason people compare it to digital gold.
🟠 Your keys matter. A private key lets you authorize Bitcoin transactions. Lose access to your keys, and recovering your Bitcoin may be impossible.
Of course, Bitcoin isn't risk-free. Its price can swing sharply, and protecting your keys is your responsibility if you hold Bitcoin yourself.
Here's the part I find most interesting: Bitcoin lets people maintain a shared transaction record without relying on one central operator.
Question: What was hardest for you to understand about Bitcoin: how it works, why it has value, or how to store it safely?
