📊Most of Coinbase's profit came from crypto price gains, not trading. Here's the fine print.
Both headlines look great at first glance. Both need a second look before you decide what they mean. 🤔
📊 What Happened?
Coinbase reported a third-quarter net income of $719 million, or $2.51 per share. Analysts had expected a loss of 26 cents per share. It's the company's first profit after two losing quarters.
Strategy went much bigger. It reported $19.53 billion in net income, up from $2.79 billion a year earlier, after a $20.91 billion gain on its bitcoin.
💡 Where Coinbase's Profit Came From
Here's the detail that changes the story. $715 million of the $719 million came from valuation gains on crypto assets Coinbase holds on its balance sheet, leaving adjusted net income of $78 million.
So, the beat came mostly from crypto prices rising in the quarter, not from customers trading more.
📉 What the Business Did
Revenue was about $1.2 billion, flat from the second quarter and down 35% from a year earlier. Transaction revenue fell to $590 million, down 44% from a year earlier.
There was a bright spot. Transaction revenue beat the roughly $527 million estimate. Weak, but better than feared.
🧩 The Parts That Looked Good
Subscription and services revenue rose 3% to $570 million, with stablecoin-related revenue making up $307 million of it. Coinbase's share of crypto trading volume rose to 10.7%, its fourth straight quarterly gain.
Newer products are growing too. Prediction markets passed $200 million in annualized revenue.
🟠 Strategy: Same Pattern, Bigger Scale
Strategy's number works the same way. It's mostly the paper gain on bitcoin it holds. It held 848,517 BTC as of October 25, while revenue from its software business fell 3% to $125.4 million.
CFO Andrew Kang will step down on November 5. That's a change worth noting at a company this tied to one asset.
🧱 The Fair Counterpoint
I don't want to dismiss the gains. Holding crypto is part of both strategies, and valuation gains are real accounting income. But they swing both ways. Coinbase posted a $359.5 million net loss in the second quarter amid investment-related losses.
That's why I think the quarterly headline matters less than the underlying business.
⚠️ The Risk Scenario
If crypto prices fall, the same line that lifted profit can turn into a loss. Coinbase's trading revenue is still far below last year, and a profit made of paper gains doesn't prove that demand is back.

💡 The Bottom Line
Both companies posted huge profits, and both profits came mostly from crypto prices, not from the core business. The adjusted numbers tell the quieter, more useful story.
The real question isn't whether the headline looks good. It's what the numbers look like with the price gains taken out.
That's the part worth watching.
