I’ve been seeing people mention Babylon’s “fast unstaking,” so I decided to look deeper into how it actually works. The more I read, the more I realized that the word “fast” does not mean what many people assume.
I spent more time than expected researching @BabylonLabs_io staking. Around 56,853 BTC, worth approximately $5.6 billion, is currently staked while remaining fully self-custodied, with no wrapping involved.
But the most interesting part was not the TVL. It was the unstaking process.
“Fast unstaking” does not mean Bitcoin’s native unbonding period is shortened. Users still have to wait through the full unbonding period. The difference is what happens once that waiting period ends.
With many $BTC DeFi wrappers, completing the unbonding period is only one step. Users may still need to submit a claim transaction, wait for custodian approval, or complete another process before their BTC becomes available.
Once the unbonding period ends, the $BTC automatically becomes a normal, spendable UTXO again. There is no claim transaction, no intermediary, and no one standing between users and their coins.
That changed the way I understood the word “fast.”
It is not faster than Bitcoin’s own timing. It is faster because, once the waiting period is over, there is nothing else left to do.
Experienced users may already understand this distinction. But I wonder how many people saw “fast unstaking,” expected instant liquidity, and only later realized what it actually meant.

At first, I assumed BABY's three core utilities—gas, governance, and security—would operate as a single, interconnected system, each reinforcing the others.
That isn't what I found.
Gas usage came first and remained remarkably consistent, driven by actual network activity rather than market sentiment. Governance followed a completely different rhythm, surging around proposal deadlines before falling quiet again. Security, meanwhile, stayed in the background, with validator-staked tokens showing little reaction to either gas activity or governance cycles.
What stood out most was how little these three utilities overlapped. Very few wallets interacted meaningfully with all of them. Instead, most participants chose a single lane and stayed there, making BABY feel less like one token with three connected functions and more like three distinct utilities serving three different audiences. Maybe that's simply how utility evolves in the early stages of a network.

At first, I assumed BitVM3 was simply a more efficient implementation of BitVM—another optimization focused on reducing the size of assert and disprove transactions. But after seeing how it's applied in trustless Bitcoin vaults, it became clear that the real innovation isn't lower cost. It's the sequencing. With pre-signed transactions, the exit conditions are established before the deposit is ever made. Every liquidation path and every custody reassignment is cryptographically committed in advance, before a single satoshi moves. That ordering fundamentally changes the trust model. Users aren't relying on an operator's future promise—they're relying on transactions that already exist, waiting only to be broadcast under predefined conditions. BitVM3 further streamlines the process by consolidating verification into a single off-chain garbled circuit, reducing friction during setup. But the timelocks governing withdrawals remain unchanged. Liquidity still requires patience. Which raises an interesting question: perhaps trustless custody was never the hardest problem to solve. At first, I thought self-custody and borrowing couldn't coexist. If you wanted liquidity, you had to give up your keys and trust someone else.
Native Bitcoin-backed loans challenge that assumption.
But the real story doesn't start when the loan opens—it starts after.
Collateral still needs to live somewhere verifiable. That means trust never disappears; it simply changes shape. The question isn't whether trust exists, but where it lives.
Most people focus on interest rates. I think they're looking at the wrong metric.
The moment that matters most is the borrower's first experience. If the process feels transparent, secure, and predictable, they'll come back. That's not just innovation—it's retention.
Maybe the future of Bitcoin lending isn't about eliminating trust.
Maybe it's about making trust verifiable.
