Prima che $PEPE diventasse un token da miliardi, era un cartone animato disegnato dall'artista Matt Furie nel 2005 per il suo fumetto Boy’s Club. Nel fumetto, Pepe non era politico, controverso o anche solo un meme. Era rilassato, espressivo e strano nel modo esatto in cui l'umorismo di internet degli inizi amava. E così, Pepe divenne il personaggio perfetto per le facce reattive all'interno dei forum di internet.
Pepe divenne virale molto prima che bitcoin esistesse. Prima su MySpace e 4chan, poi su Tumblr, poi su Reddit. Nel tempo, il meme si è evoluto e si è frantumato in migliaia di sub-meme. A metà degli anni 2010, Pepe era stato adottato da quasi ogni angolo di internet, compresi alcuni che persino il creatore originale disapprovava fortemente.
Attraverso questo, Pepe divenne la mascotte della cultura internet grezza e non filtrata. Emozionale, assurdo e senza fine remixabile.
