This has never happened before.
Not during the Dot-Com crash. Not during 2008. Not during COVID. Not during any crisis or recession or market panic in the entire dataset going back to 1990.
Americans are holding more cash relative to their total financial assets than at any recorded point in modern history.
And the stock market is simultaneously sitting at 238% of GDP. Its own all time record.
Both of those things are true at the same time. Maximum equity valuations. Maximum cash holdings. The most stretched market in history sitting alongside the most defensive household positioning in history.
That contradiction tells you everything about the anxiety underneath the surface of this economy.
People own stocks because they have to. Because their 401k is invested. Because VOO keeps getting inflows on autopilot. But they are also quietly building cash positions at a pace that has never been seen before.
