Alt coin pumps 15%. Everyone starts talking about it.
Then another 8%.
Suddenly the same people who ignored it at $10 are buying at $12. And ten minutes later: "Why did it dump right after I bought?" 😅
Honestly, the biggest mistake in altcoin trading isn't picking the wrong coin. It's picking the right coin at the wrong moment.
A pump is not an entry signal
Say a coin has been stuck between $10 and $11 for days. Volume picks up, price breaks $11, runs to $11.50, then $12.
Most people see green candles and think, "It's going to $15, I need to get in NOW."
Experienced traders ask something else: *will $11 actually hold as support?*
A breakout is interesting. A breakout with a successful retest is much more interesting.
My 3-step setup
1. Breakout. Price has to clear a real resistance level with real volume. A wick above resistance isn't confirmation. I want to see buyers prove they'll defend the higher price.
2. Retest. This is where most people lose patience. Say resistance is $10 and the breakout takes it to $10.50. Price then pulls back to $10.05–$10.20. If buyers step in there and it starts climbing again, you get a much cleaner risk/reward than chasing the original pump.
3. BTC check. A coin can have a beautiful chart, but if BTC drops sharply, liquidity leaves altcoins fast. So I look at BTC first, then market structure, then volume, then the altcoin. Never the other way around.
The real trap is candle #3 or #4
Not the first green candle. The third or fourth.
That's when FOMO peaks. Early buyers are in profit, late buyers are rushing in, and social media fills up with "Next 10X! 🚀" and "Don't miss this!"
And that's often exactly where early buyers are looking for someone to sell to.
Not every pump is a trap. But attention is not confirmation.
How I'd manage the trade
I wouldn't go in with everything at once.
- Entry 1: Small position after breakout confirmation
- Entry 2: Add on a successful retest
- Stop loss: Below the invalidation level
- TP1: Previous major resistance
- TP2: Next resistance
- TP3: Trail the rest if momentum continues
Exact levels depend on the chart. The structure is what matters.
Don't skip the stop loss
Here's the uncomfortable truth: being right about direction isn't enough. You can pick a coin that eventually goes up and still lose money, because you entered early and couldn't survive the pullback.
I'll take small risk with a clear invalidation over a big position and hope, every time.

✅ Strength while BTC stays stable
A coin being up 20% already doesn't excite me. The best trade is often the one quietly setting up before the crowd shows up.
The one question that changes everything
Don't ask, "Which altcoin will pump next?"
Ask, "Where am I wrong, and how much does it cost me?"
You don't need to catch the first 10% or even the first 20%. Waiting for confirmation means a later entry, but with a much clearer exit plan.
The market doesn't punish you for missing a pump. FOMO does.
The best trade isn't always the one that makes the most. It's the one where you knew exactly what you were risking before you entered.
