🌊 Leaving its self-built L1 behind for Sui—what do you make of DATA Network’s move?
A story from this week that could easily get lost in the market noise: AI training data protocol DATA Network (formerly Story Protocol) announced it would shut down its standalone chain and run natively on Sui instead.
🔹 The Sui Foundation invested $30 million, becoming DATA Network’s largest institutional holder
🔹 Existing DATA tokens will migrate to Sui at a 1:1 ratio; the original network will remain operational until the transition is complete
🔹 Walrus will become the default storage layer for its applications
🔹 Trace, its data contribution registry, has recorded more than 250 million contributions
A few things worth looking at calmly:
First, the $30 million is a strategic investment in DATA Network—not $30 million in SUI buying pressure. People on X have already come forward specifically to clarify this.
Second, when a public blockchain voluntarily “retires,” it shows that maintaining its own L1 comes with significant costs and ecosystem pressures. More and more projects this cycle are asking themselves the same question: rather than maintaining a chain of their own, why not leverage someone else’s performance, wallets, and users?
Third, 1:1 migrations are prime time for phishing. Fake migration sites, fake airdrops, and “support” accounts DMing you to “help with the swap” will almost certainly pop up. Follow only the steps announced through official channels, and don’t rush to click any links. The original network is still running, so there’s no need to do it in the next day or two.
My take: for Sui, this is a major client that adds an “AI data” narrative; for DATA holders, what really matters is actual usage and token utility after the migration—not the move itself.
Do you think projects giving up their own L1 and moving to a major blockchain is pragmatic—or an admission of defeat? 👇
