A smartphone in a serial AirX case was lifted on a hot air balloon into the stratosphere and dropped from a height of 30,607 meters over the northern part of Sweden, near the Esrange space center. This is more than three times higher than the flight altitude of a commercial passenger airliner.
According to the rules of the Guinness Book of Records, the device had to fall without a parachute, and the first contact with the ground was supposed to be the case.
The phone was dropped over a forest to minimize risks to people. After landing, a search team spent more than five hours scanning the area—the search area covered about two square kilometers.
When the smartphone was found, it turned out to be intact. So the device passed the test and received an official Guinness World Records title for the highest drop of a mobile phone in a case onto a natural landscape.
