After a year of speed cuts, Pasteur changes focus: security and throughput headroom.
3 BEPs, 1 activation:
BEP-682 — closes a bridge verification gap. The old precompile at 0x67 counted each validator signature only once, so a minority could forge a supermajority. Now rejects duplicates entirely.
BEP-695 — validator key rotation is binding. Rotated keys lose admin privileges, slash evictions follow rotations, blacklisted addresses blocked in sig-based governance votes.
BEP-675 — the big one for builders. Validators no longer re-execute every block from scratch. Builder submits a pre-executed block, validator checks consensus rules, signs, broadcasts.
Testnet results:
• Validator critical path: 125ms → 15ms
• Throughput: 1,237 → 2,324 TPS
• Block time unchanged at 450ms
• Gas limit unchanged at 100M
Average block gas used jumped from 46.35M to 84.15M. Blocks were going out half full because the clock ran out, not because there was nothing to include.
What this means:
More transactions per block without changing speed or gas pricing. DApps get cheaper, smoother execution. opBNB and L2 builders inherit the headroom. The chain spends its upgrade cycle on bridge safety instead of another block time cut.
