A cross-chain bridge holding $XRP went from 200,410 XRP to 493 in 97 minutes — 99.7% of its reserve, drained across 94 transactions.

What happened: on August 9, an attacker found a flaw in the Coreum bridge's relayer logic that treated fake deposit events as real, triggering genuine XRP withdrawals from the reserve wallet. Authorization required 17 of 28 relayer keys — and the exploit fooled that consensus into approving nearly a hundred illegitimate transactions in a row. The bridge is suspended; the team has filed with the FBI.

The bear case: bridged XRP on the destination chain is no longer fully backed. Tokens meant to be 1:1 claims on real XRP are now partially collateralized — the failure mode that has made bridges the most-exploited infrastructure in crypto.

The bull case for XRP itself: this is a third-party bridge failure, not an XRP Ledger failure. XRPL worked exactly as designed; the flaw lived in Coreum's verification. XRP sits near $1.01 (~$64.6B cap) and barely moved, so the market read it the same way.

Our read: multisig is only as strong as what it validates. Seventeen honest signers approving a fake input still produces a real theft — the signatures were never the weak link, the deposit check was. Falsifiable — if bridged XRP is made whole and the bridge reopens audited, this stays contained. If holders eat the loss, liquidity moves back to native XRPL rails.
