Asset management firm Fidelity projects that 42% of $BTC 's circulating supply may become illiquid within seven years as corporate treasuries and long-term holders accumulate coins. The analysis identifies 8.3 million BTC potentially locked away from active trading.
Two key groups drive this supply reduction according to Fidelity's research. Long-term holders who haven't moved coins for at least seven years continue expanding their positions without selling. Public companies holding minimum 1,000 BTC also maintain steady accumulation patterns.
Currently 105 publicly traded companies hold BTC on their balance sheets with combined holdings exceeding 969,000 coins. This represents 4.61% of the total BTC supply, based on Bitbo data tracking corporate treasuries.
Fidelity estimates these combined groups will control over 6 million BTC by the end of 2025, representing 28% of the maximum 21 million coin supply. The projection assumes current accumulation rates continue unchanged.
Bitcoin's circulating supply currently stands at approximately 19.8 million coins as of the second quarter 2025. Long-term holder wallets haven't decreased their BTC holdings since 2016 according to the analysis.
