I actually frowned at my screen No... theres got to be a catch. So I started digging. The more I read about @babylonlabs_io the weirder it got your BTC stays on the Bitcoin network. No wrapped coins no handing your Bitcoin to someone else. Yet it can still be used to help strengthen PoS chains. I looked at the clock... Forty minutes had disappeared. That almost never happens anymore. Crypto throws thousands of projects at us every year. Very few make me close X and start reading documentation instead babylon just did. The site says 214 Finality Providers are integrated globally. Sounds like a wide operator set. Then I opened the Phase 2 registration guide and found the operational filter: only providers ranked in the top 60 become active and begin submitting finality votes. K That means registration and participation are technically different states. A provider can be registered but hold no delegated voting power. An active provider receives delegation and votes. A jailed provider drops to zero voting power until recovery conditions are met. Double-signing is more final: the EOTS private key becomes extractable, voting power is removed, and the provider enters an irreversible slashed state. hold up—not saying a 60-provider active set is automatically centralized. The protocol needs a bounded group capable of consistently committing public randomness and submitting EOTS finality signatures. still, I kept thinking about the ranking layer. Babylon may integrate hundreds of operators, but delegated BTC decides which ones actually touch finality. So the harder decentralization metric may not be provider count.
