Sweden: Riksbank calls for preparing legislation for a possible digital krona
On October 15, 2026, the central bank published a letter dated October 7 and addressed to Parliament’s Finance Committee. It proposes launching a public study of the necessary legal changes. It clarifies that no decision has been made on whether a digital krona should be issued.
Timing matters: it estimates at least five years for implementation by the bank and the market, plus the time needed to reform the laws. This is a working estimate, not a launch date.
Among the reasons it cites are payment resilience, the development of the digital euro, and competition from other payment methods. It considers the replacement of the krona by foreign stablecoins not to be a significant short-term risk, though it merits attention in the long term.
The study should address distribution, responsibilities, offline payments, privacy, data protection, and anti-money-laundering controls. These are outstanding design and regulatory questions, not features that are already available.
A digital krona would be money issued by the central bank. Stablecoins such as USDC and USDT have private issuers: sharing a digital format does not give them the same backing or entail the same risks.
Market snapshot: At 13:48 UTC on 16/10, Binance showed BTC at 81,839.51 USDT (+1.65% in 24 hours) and USDC at 1.00115 USDT. The Swedish debate affects future competition among payment methods; it does not confirm new demand for BTC or justify attributing that price movement to it.
