⚡ 12.8 seconds → 0.15 seconds. On Solana, the time it takes for a payment to become irreversible has just been cut by about 85×.
📌 The facts (Oct. 21, 2026)
• Alpenglow, the new consensus protocol designed by Anza, has been live on the mainnet of
$SOL since epoch 1064
• It replaces TowerBFT, which has been used since the network launched in March 2020
• “Finality” goes from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds—roughly the blink of an eye
• Switch at slot 459,653,000: 446 of 654 validators signed the genesis certificate
🧠 What is finality?
It’s the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed. That’s what a merchant or platform waits for before saying, “All set, the money has arrived.” Before, validators voted via transactions stacked across 32 blocks. Now, they send their votes directly to one another and combine them into certificates: one or two rounds of voting are enough.
👤 Imagine Fatou (a fictional character), a phone-accessory seller in Conakry. A customer pays her in
$USDC on Solana. Before, she’d wait a few seconds, unsure whether to hand over the charger. Now, final confirmation arrives almost before he puts his phone away.
⚖️ A few caveats
• Fees and apps aren’t changing: only the consensus layer has been replaced
• 150 ms is a target under normal conditions, not a fixed guarantee
• The second phase, Rotor (block propagation), doesn’t have a date yet
• Your exchange may still apply its own deposit-crediting delays
