Meta* Platforms is preparing to begin production of its own artificial intelligence chip in September. According to an internal company document reviewed by Reuters, a project codenamed Iris is part of a strategy to increase Meta*’s computing power to 14 gigawatts by 2027.

Iris is part of the Meta* Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) family — a lineup of specialized AI accelerators that the company designs in-house. The chip will be used to train and run artificial intelligence models used in Facebook* and Instagram* services.
