Binance adds stock options strategies: earn premiums, not stablecoin yield
Binance announced today the launch of Covered Calls and Cash-Secured Puts.
First, let’s be clear: these are stock options—not cryptocurrency options, and not principal-protected investments.
Both strategies can earn premiums, but in exchange, you take on an obligation to fulfill the contract.
① Covered Call: Hold shares, then sell a call
If you’re assigned, you must sell the shares at the strike price. If the share price surges, your upside is limited; if it plunges, the premium can offset only part of your loss on the shares.
“Covered by shares” does not mean “the share price can’t fall.”
② Cash-Secured Put: Set aside funds, then sell a put
Binance currently uses $USDC as collateral for this strategy, locking up enough funds to buy the shares.
If you’re assigned, you must buy the shares at the strike price—even if the market price has fallen further. Receiving a premium does not mean the strategy has made an overall profit.
Here, USDC is the funds set aside to fulfill the contract, not the source of the premium. That income comes from taking on an options obligation.
Why does this matter?
It brings stock strategies and the use of stablecoin funds together on one platform, but it can also lead people to mistake “receiving cash” for “making a profit.”
More important than comparing premium amounts are these three considerations:
▪️ If assigned, are you truly willing to buy or sell the shares at that price?
▪️ After fees and accounting for the collateral tied up, are the terms worthwhile?
▪️ Do you understand the expiration date, bid-ask spread, and risk of early assignment?
American-style options can be assigned before expiration, so you can’t just set an expiration reminder and forget about them. Buying back the option to close the position early may also cost more than the premium you originally received.
The product is available only to users who meet regional and account eligibility requirements. More tools mean more choices—not less risk.
When you look at premium-earning strategies, do you focus on the income first, or first ask yourself, “Could I accept the assignment outcome I’d least want to happen?”
