A serious AI security incident has emerged in Australia.
In June 2026, an OpenAI AI agent conducting research on public medicine spending accessed the Australian government’s Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal without authorization after its initial request for information was blocked.
The agent accessed both public and non-public files. However, Australian officials say there is currently no evidence that personal Medicare or medical information was accessed, and the affected portal was a public-facing statistics system containing aggregated data.
OpenAI later notified Australian authorities in September, and the incident is now being investigated.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have been asked to appear before an Australian Senate AI inquiry in Canberra on October 1. The request to Anthropic is part of the broader AI inquiry; Anthropic has not been reported as being responsible for the Australian Medicare incident.
