Notorious hacker says stolen crypto is like ‘holding a hot potato’On Thursday, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, saw more than $6 billion hacked from its system. Evidence pointed to North Korean hackers, who drained the accounts in a matter of minutes. But what does a hacker do with billions of dollars in stolen crypto? Perhaps no one on the planet is more qualified to discuss the hack than Ilya Lichtenstein, the notorious hacker who in 2023, alongside his wife, Heather Morgan, pleaded guilty to orchestrating a $4.5 billion money-laundering scheme linked to the 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex. In 2024, Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison, but he was released early this January. He now says that he has switched sides and is working as a “white hat” hacker trying to stop cyberattacks. What are your thoughts on what we do know about the specifics of the hack? This does fit the North Korean modus operandi. So, typically, they go for the weakest link. They’re not going to attack, like, Binance.com the website, because they have a lot of security there. But there might be an employee who is vulnerable to phishing who might be tricked into downloading a virus. And I think as a defender, you need to be aware of, “Where is the weakest link in the chain?” It’s not enough to just secure the front door, you have to secure all the entrances, the doors and the windows. You’ve been on both sides of this. What advice would you have for law enforcement in this case, who are trying to figure out where this money went? You may have heard that if you’re trying to investigate a murder, your best chance is in the first 48 hours. It’s kind of the same with crypto. Right now, all of these funds are moving and getting split, split, split into small pieces and shuffled around and moved together. And because AI agents can do this, it’s happening incredibly quickly. And so it’s really a race against time to just try to catch up and trace it before it grows exponentially harder to trace. At one point, you stole what amounted to billions of dollars worth of crypto. That’s what we’re seeing right now with this Binance hack. After someone hacks into an exchange and takes all this Bitcoin, what happens then? They’re probably feeling a little nervous, if I had to guess, because there are a lot of eyes on that Bitcoin. It’s all on a blockchain that is publicly visible. Anyone can investigate it. And there are very, very sophisticated blockchain analysis tools right now. And, as we’ve seen, a lot of these crypto platforms — such as Tether/USD, for example — have the ability to freeze funds. Notorious hacker says stolen crypto is like ‘holding a hot potato’

On Thursday, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, saw more than $6 billion hacked from its system.
This does fit the North Korean modus operandi. So, typically, they go for the weakest link. They’re not going to attack, like, Binance.com the website, because they have a lot of security there. But there might be an employee who is vulnerable to phishing who might be tricked into downloading a virus. The Largest Crypto Hack in History: North Korea Slashes Binance for USD 6.36 BillionIn what has officially been categorized as the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, approximately USD 6.36 billion was drained from Binance wallets across ten different blockchains. The overwhelming majority of the funds were siphoned away in a chillingly fast 20-minute window beginning at 20:05 UTC. Leading blockchain intelligence and cybersecurity firms, including TRM Labs and Elliptic, have attributed the massive operation with high confidence to TraderTraitor (also widely tracked as part of the state-sponsored Lazarus Group), an elite hacking unit tied to North Korea. Anatomy of the Heist: How the Attack Unfolded The staggering scale of the breach makes it roughly four times larger than the previous record-holder—the USD 1.5 billion hack on Bybit in February 2025. The Timeline: Starting sharply at 20:05 UTC, attackers targeted Binance wallets spanning ten distinct blockchains, moving billions in a matter of minutes. The first wave hit the XRP Ledger, followed swiftly by rapid outflows across Solana, Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, and others. The Infrastructure Compromise: Rather than breaking the core cryptography, investigators noted that the attack bore similarities to earlier state-backed heists—pointing to a deep compromise of signing infrastructure. On Ethereum, the attacker leveraged pre-signed authorizations and smart contract delegations to turn a Binance hot wallet into an attacker-controlled sweeper. The Scale: Four primary assets—USDT on Ethereum, Bitcoin (BTC), USDC, and USDT on Tron—accounted for nearly 74% of the total stolen volume. A High-Stakes Race: Freezes and Counter-Measures As soon as the breach was detected, a massive coordinated effort swung into action across the crypto ecosystem to stymie the hackers. The Freezes: Major token issuers and protocol security councils—including Tether, Circle, Ripple, World Liberty Financial, and Arbitrum—rapidly blacklisted addresses and froze assets. Roughly USD 2.7 billion in stablecoins and network tokens were successfully frozen. The Attacker's Counter-Moves: To outpace the incoming freezes, the attackers aggressively swapped tokens, sold USDT to market makers, and even borrowed ETH against collateral on decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols like Aave. Current Status: Despite billions being locked down by swift industry coordination, the bad actors still retained over USD 2.4 billion in unfreezeable assets—such as massive holdings of Bitcoin and Ethereum—beyond the reach of any single issuer. Growing State-Sponsored Cyber Threats This historic incident dramatically underscores the growing sophistication of North Korean state-sponsored cyber operations. According to on-chain tracking data, this single heist nearly doubles the total cumulative volume of cryptoassets previously attributed to North Korean state actors over the years. While Binance quickly suspended withdrawals on affected networks and assured users that customer funds remained safe, the attack serves as a stark reminder of the monumental security challenges facing centralized exchange infrastructure and cross-chain asset management. As blockchain investigators continue tracking the automated layering scripts and cross-chain mixing of the remaining funds, the event will likely trigger a massive overhaul of institutional hot wallet governance industry-wide.#BinanceSAFUFundTransferCompleted7499BTC #BinanceRecovery90% of stolen assets #CZSaysCompensationIsinPlaceUsersAreProtected #YiHe:ProofOfReserves:10TokensAt100%Backing #CZSaysCompensationIsinPlaceUsersAreProtected #BackedNotBroken:RichardTengSaysUsersBearNoLoss

A High-Stakes Race: Freezes and Counter-Measures
As soon as the breach was detected, a massive coordinated effort swung into action across the crypto ecosystem to stymie the hackers.
Growing State-Sponsored Cyber Threats
This historic incident dramatically underscores the growing sophistication of North Korean state-sponsored cyber operations.

Bitcoin’s White Paper Turns 18: From Nine Pages to Wall Street and WashingtonEighteen years ago, on October 31, 2008, an unknown person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto published a nine-page document that would eventually change the global financial conversation. Titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, the white paper introduced an idea that seemed almost impossible at the time: a digital currency that could operate without banks, governments, or traditional financial institutions controlling every transaction. Back then, Bitcoin was little more than an experiment discussed among cryptography enthusiasts. Today, it has become a major part of the financial industry, attracting individual investors, institutional players, major companies, and policymakers. From an Internet Experiment to Wall Street Bitcoin's journey has been anything but ordinary. In its early years, many people dismissed it as a niche technology with little real-world value. However, its decentralized design, limited supply of 21 million coins, and ability to transfer value without traditional intermediaries gradually attracted global attention. Over time, Bitcoin moved beyond online communities and entered mainstream financial markets. The launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States in January 2024 marked an important milestone, giving investors access to Bitcoin through traditional brokerage accounts. Large financial institutions also began exploring Bitcoin-related investment products and services, bringing digital assets closer to the traditional financial system. Bitcoin Reaches Washington Bitcoin's influence has also expanded into political and regulatory discussions in Washington. US lawmakers and regulators have increasingly focused on how digital assets should be regulated, how investors can be protected, and what role cryptocurrencies could play in the country's financial future. Bitcoin is no longer simply a technology conversation. It has become part of broader discussions about financial innovation, investment, regulation, and the future of money. The Original Vision Still Matters Despite its growing connection with Wall Street, Bitcoin's original idea remains important: allowing people to transfer value directly without relying on a central financial authority. However, Bitcoin's journey has also brought challenges, including extreme price volatility, security risks, regulatory uncertainty, and debates over its environmental impact. Eighteen years after its white paper was published, Bitcoin stands in a very different position from where it started. What began as nine pages of technical ideas has grown into a global financial phenomenon. Whether Bitcoin ultimately becomes a widely used form of money, a long-term store of value, or a combination of both remains an open question. One thing is clear: the document published by Satoshi Nakamoto on Halloween 2008 started a conversation that the financial world can no longer ignore. #BinanceSAFUFundTransferCompleted7499BTC #YiHe:ProofOfReserves:10TokensAt100%Backing #BinanceSAFUFundTransferCompleted7499BTC
