🚨 Circle reported $1.4B in first-half revenue and reserve income. But the $36T USDC volume headline hides a bigger question.

Where does the money actually come from?

Circle says it paid $819M to distribution partners and for transaction costs, while spending another $473M on infrastructure, compliance and product development.

Its breakdown suggests roughly 7 cents of net profit for every dollar earned.

Now look at the business model.

In Q2, $668M of Circle's $701M in revenue and reserve income came from reserve income. Only $34M came from other revenue.

That means the economics depend heavily on USDC balances and the returns earned on the assets backing them—not simply on blockchain activity.

There's another detail.

USDC recorded $21.5T in on-chain transaction volume in Q1 and $14.8T in Q2, a roughly 31% sequential decline despite strong year-over-year growth.

That isn't proof of weakening adoption. On-chain volume isn't the same as unique capital or merchant payments; the same dollar can move multiple times.

The real test is whether USDC circulation, useful payment activity and reserve economics remain resilient as interest rates change.
