What Is a Full Node?

A full node is a computer that stores an entire blockchain and independently validates every transaction and block against the network rules.
Unlike light nodes that trust other participants for data, a full node checks everything itself. This independent verification is what allows a blockchain to stay honest without relying on a central authority.

How Does a Full Node Work?

A full node downloads and keeps a local copy of the ledger. When new transactions and blocks are broadcast across the network, the node verifies them before accepting them. It typically checks several things:
  • Digital signatures: to confirm that the sender actually owns the funds being spent.
  • Block structure: including whether a block correctly references the cryptographic hash of the previous block.
  • Consensus rules: such as valid block rewards and whether the block meets the network’s difficulty or validation requirements.

If any rule is broken, the full node rejects the block or transaction. Some full nodes prune older historical data to save storage space while still validating the current state, whereas an archive node keeps the complete history since the genesis block. Both types validate the chain in the same way; they mainly differ in how much history they retain.

Why Full Nodes Matter

Full nodes are the backbone of a decentralized network. Each one acts as an independent node that enforces the rules, so no single party can rewrite history or spend the same coins twice. The more widely full nodes are distributed, the harder it generally becomes to censor or attack the network.

Running a full node can also give users greater privacy and control, since they can verify their own transactions rather than trusting a third party. In return, operators usually need enough disk space, bandwidth, and time to download and stay in sync with the chain, which can range from hours to days depending on the network.
