A simple example when you take out a mortgage the bank sees your income and credit history. Your neighbor doesn't. A regulator auditing the bank can pull records when needed. None of these groups has the same visibility and none of them needs it. That layered access is what makes the system both functional and accountable.
Public blockchains mostly skip this. Everything is visible to everyone all the time which is great for auditability but terrible for anything resembling normal financial confidentiality. There's no in-between setting.
Confidential smart contracts, which is what Dusk Network's XSC standard is built around are an attempt to bring that layered model on chain. A transaction can still be proven valid by the network. But who actually sees the transaction details can be scoped closer to how disclosure already works off chain rather than an all or nothing broadcast.
It's a less flashy idea than private crypto but arguably the more useful one. Compliance doesn't really need everyone to see everything. It needs the right parties to be able to verify the right things on demand.
Worth sitting with especially for anyone assuming on chain privacy and on chain compliance pull in opposite directions.

It doesn't know whether a Finality Provider has behaved honestly or whether a slashing condition has been triggered. Those interpretations exist entirely within Babylon's protocol and its connected ecosystem. Bitcoin supplies the immutable anchor but it deliberately remains unaware of the higher level meaning attached to it.
That separation feels elegant, yet it introduces an unusual maintenance problem. As Babylon expands to support more consumer chains governance updates and staking features the semantic layer around Bitcoin inevitably becomes more complex. Bitcoin stays remarkably stable while the protocol built around it continues to evolve. Ironically the more successful the system becomes the greater the gap between a simple Bitcoin transaction and everything it represents elsewhere.
I keep wondering whether the long term challenge is less about proving Bitcoin can secure external networks and more about ensuring that every participant continues to interpret those Bitcoin transactions in exactly the same way. Shared security ultimately depends on shared interpretation and that may be harder to preserve than shared capital itself.
