Is NEAR slowing down its token expansion? 📉
NEAR Protocol’s total supply grew by 2.69 million NEAR (around 0.206%) over 31 days to reach 1.309 billion NEAR. Meanwhile, a new governance proposal (HSP-029) could cut the network's maximum annual issuance cap by 36%, bringing it down from 2.5% to 1.6%.
The proposal includes a 90-day grace period followed by a smooth 24-month linear ramp toward the lower target. It preserves the 90/10 reward split between stakers and the treasury, though activating the cap requires validator adoption of a protocol upgrade.
Slower supply creation directly reduces dilution for non-staking token holders. However, it also lowers fresh token rewards paid to stakers, meaning price impact will ultimately depend on market demand and network valuation.
Do you think reducing token issuance will support NEAR’s long-term price action, or could lower staking yields reduce network participation? 👇
