I spent nearly thirty minutes staring at a single line in @BabylonLabs_io’s Phase-1 Testnet-4 documentation. Not because it was difficult to understand, but because it simply didn’t feel right. A blockchain is built to run for years, yet Babylon’s first major testnet was given a hard limit of exactly 120 hours. The longer I looked at that number, the more convinced I became that it was describing something beyond time itself. My first explanation was obvious: campaign logistics. But the more I thought about it, the weaker that explanation became. If scheduling had been the only concern, 96 hours or 168 hours would have worked just as well. Defining 120 hours so precisely suggested that Babylon was deliberately placing a boundary around something much more important than the clock. That was when I realized I had been looking at the wrong subject. Babylon wasn’t limiting the network it was limiting the experiment. A blockchain earns trust by surviving over time, but an experiment earns trust by answering one question with as little ambiguity as possible. Run it for too long, and the growing number of variables can make the answer less convincing, not more. Seen from that perspective, the entire architecture of Phase-1 Testnet-4 suddenly made sense. Babylon wasn’t trying to recreate a miniature mainnet. It deliberately isolated one slice of the system: the Bitcoin Staking flow on Signet, from staking BTC to selecting a Finality Provider and completing the validation process. By narrowing the scope, every failure revealed more about the design, while every successful outcome became far easier to trust. After nearly thirty minutes, the number itself no longer mattered to me. What stayed with me was the engineering philosophy behind it. Phase-1 Testnet-4 wasn’t built to prove that Babylon was ready for mainnet. In DeFi, a parameter set to zero usually looks unfinished. That was my first reaction when I saw Liquidation Fee = 0 BPS in @BabylonLabs_io’s Phase-2 Testnet documentation. I assumed the incentive had simply not been configured yet. But after looking more closely at Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV), zero began to look less like an omission and more like a boundary. On most EVM lending protocols, rewarding a liquidator is relatively straightforward. Collateral exists as contract state, so part of it can be reassigned through an accounting update. TBV does not begin from that model. Bitcoin remains controlled through UTXOs and pre-constructed transaction paths, where the structure of each spend is part of the security design itself. That changes the meaning of a liquidation fee. In TBV, adding a familiar DeFi incentive may not be an isolated parameter change. Depending on how the reward is funded and delivered, it could affect outputs, redemption rights, settlement paths, or the transaction graph already committed to by the Vault. Economics cannot be adjusted without first asking whether the underlying Bitcoin execution path still preserves the same trust assumptions. This does not prove that liquidation incentives are impossible in TBV, nor that 0 BPS will remain permanent. But it reveals something more important: Bitcoin-native lending cannot simply copy the economic templates of account-based DeFi. Babylon still manages risk through a 78% Collateral Factor, liquidation below Health Factor 1, and recovery toward a Target Health Factor of 1.24. The objective is familiar. The architecture enforcing it is not. That is why 0 BPS caught my attention.
