The Binance Heist: $6.3 Billion Stolen in Minutes

On October 29, Binance suffered the largest crypto theft in history. Approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets were drained from the exchange.

This was not a sudden attack. According to Binance's own report, it was a multi-stage operation that began in June.

How it happened:

1. Hackers used a bogus job interview and software hidden in an advertisement to compromise the computers of two Binance software engineers.

2. They then used a third computer to gain access to the internal systems that authorize withdrawals.

3. Using EIP-7702, an Ethereum feature, they registered authorization for their own software to operate a hot wallet called "Binance 14".

4. That authorization transaction cost only around $15 in gas fees.

5. Within minutes, they executed a single transaction worth approximately $2.5 billion, including 167,464 ETH and over $1.6 billion in USDT.

The FBI has attributed the attack to a North Korea-linked group called TraderTraitor / Lazarus Group.

Where is the money now:

- Around $2.85 billion has been frozen with help from issuers, law enforcement, and partners.

- Around $3.11 billion is still sitting in wallets linked to the attack.

- Around $124 million in stolen altcoins has already been swapped into Bitcoin.

- The funds have been split across more than 20,000 wallets, 16 blockchains, and 65,000 transactions.

What Binance did:

Binance froze withdrawals, then stated it will bear the full financial impact. The company said it has covered 90% to 98% of the losses from its own treasury and corporate funds, and that losses will not be passed on to users.

What this means for traders:

1. No exchange is 100% safe. Never keep all funds in one place.

2. Use cold wallets for long-term holdings.

3. Enable 2FA, anti-phishing codes, and withdrawal address whitelisting.

4. Be careful with job offers, links, and software downloads. This entire $6.3 billion heist started with one fake job interview.

This attack is larger than the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025. It will change how exchanges, insurers, and regulators handle crypto security.

Crypto is still the future. But security must come first.
