What Is Malware?

Malware is any software program or code intentionally created to infiltrate, damage, or gain unauthorized access to computer systems and networks.

A key characteristic of malware is that it accesses a system without permission and typically without the initial notice of the user. Malware can serve various functions, including data theft, extortion, espionage, system disruption, remote control, and spreading fraudulent information.

Types of Malware

Malware is an umbrella term that covers many different types of harmful software. Some common categories include:

  • Ransomware: Takes over a system and encrypts files or the hard drive, forcing individuals or organizations to pay a ransom to recover access to their data or systems.
  • Keyloggers: Track and send keyboard keystroke input, usually to steal sensitive information, like passwords, usernames, and financial data.
  • Trojans: Deceptive programs disguised as helpful software to encourage installation. Once installed, they can be used to deliver other malware or steal sensitive data.
  • Spyware: Observes and gathers the victim's activities, reporting them to a designated party without the user's knowledge or consent.
  • Worms: Self-replicating programs that spread across networks, consuming system resources. Unlike viruses, worms do not attach to files and can travel between systems without human interaction.
  • Adware: Causes excessive advertising pop-ups on a computer, usually to generate revenue. It often piggybacks on other software and can leave systems more vulnerable to additional malware.
  • Botnets: Networks of infected computers controlled by an attacker to work together for nefarious purposes, such as launching distributed denial-of-service attacks or sending spam.
  • Rootkits: Take over a system's administrator privileges to hide malware from detection, making it difficult to locate and remove the malicious programs.
  • Wipers: Completely erase all data on the computer or network they infiltrate. They may be used for sabotage or to cover an attacker's tracks after stealing information.
  • Cryptojacking: Malicious cryptomining that uses a computer's resources to perform cryptocurrency mining without the owner's consent.

Why Malware Matters in Crypto

Cryptocurrency users may be particularly vulnerable to certain types of malware. Practicing good security habits, such as using reputable antivirus software and avoiding suspicious links, can help reduce the risk of malware infections.
