At first I assumed Falcon’s universal collateral idea mainly meant supporting a much wider range of assets.
But the more I looked the interesting question became: what actually makes an asset acceptable as collateral?
Falcon’s framework does not treat collateral value as just a market cap number. For non-stablecoin assets, its overcollateralization assessment considers factors such as volatility liquidity slippage, trading activity and historical price behavior.
That distinction matters because collateral has to work in two different worlds.
Under normal conditions, an asset can look perfectly healthy on a price feed. But during a sharp market move, the harder question is whether that asset can still be converted or hedged without significant market impact.
Higher collateral requirements can compensate for some of that uncertainty. The protocol can demand a larger buffer when an asset carries greater market risk.
But this creates an interesting efficiency trade off.
The more diverse the collateral universe becomes, the more important asset-specific risk parameters become. A single static collateral ratio would be simple, but potentially too blunt. A more granular system can use capital more efficiently, but now the safety of USDf depends partly on how accurately those parameters reflect changing market conditions.
So the real challenge may not be accepting more collateral.
It may be knowing when previously acceptable collateral has quietly become dangerous.
