Coldcard incident is still expanding.
A few days ago it was reported that more than 1,000 coins of $BTC were lost; today it has already surged to nearly $114 million. The fourth round of sweep is underway, involving more than 5,200 addresses.
The attack mechanism has been figured out: a March 2021 firmware used software-based random numbers when generating the seed instead of using a hardware random source. In other words, the randomness wasn’t random enough, and the private keys can be calculated.
Coinkite has already issued an emergency firmware update, but this round of attacks is aimed at dormant addresses that were deposited between 2021 and 2026. Many people probably don’t realize their wallets have been exposed.
If you’re using a Coldcard, check your device’s generation time right away. If it’s a version from around March 2021 or earlier, move your coins to a new wallet immediately—don’t wait. #Coldcard #冷钱包
