Fed minutes: October is still open
The Federal Reserve published the minutes of its September 15–16 meeting on October 7. They record a past discussion based on the information available at the time; their publication does not constitute a new decision on interest rates.
In September, the committee unanimously approved a 25-basis-point increase, equivalent to 0.25 percentage points, by a vote of 12–0. The target range rose to 3.75%–4%.
The minutes describe elevated inflation, solid economic activity, and a labor market close to full employment. Most participants considered that another increase would probably be appropriate before the end of the year.
They also made clear that upcoming decisions would depend on new data and their effects on the outlook and risks. That assessment does not confirm either a pause or an increase in October.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 27–28. It is worth distinguishing among three things: what was decided in September, the views reflected in the minutes, and the decision that is still to come.
Market snapshot: Binance, October 8 at 02:39 UTC: BTC 83,244.03 USDT (−0.75% in 24h); ETH −1.30%; BNB +0.94%. My take: interest rate expectations remain a risk for crypto. These changes do not prove a causal link to the minutes.
