This move is part of the reform plan proposed by Polygon last year in the "Polygon 2.0" roadmap. This change was initially proposed in July 2023 to their community, and will make POL the main token for all Polygon networks.
Polygon Labs, the main development company behind the Polygon layer 2 network, has announced that it will perform a technical upgrade to convert the MATIC token to the new POL token starting September 4.
This migration includes a technical upgrade that allows POL to become the native gas and staking token for the Polygon PoS mainchain. In the next phases of the upgrade, POL will begin securing other blockchains in Polygon’s vast “aggregate” network, including AggLayer.
“POL is a super-yield token that can be used to provide valuable services to any chain in the Polygon network, including AggLayer,” Polygon wrote in their blog post.
AggLayer is a framework developed by Polygon that allows multiple zk-rollups to share a unified bridge with Ethereum, eliminating the need for third-party bridges and enhancing user experience. AggLayer also enables atomic transactions on various zk-rollups, meaning users can swap assets or perform complex operations in a single transaction.
According to the Polygon team, MATIC holders on the Polygon PoS chain will not need to do anything for this upgrade and their tokens will automatically convert to POL. For those using MATIC on Polygon's zkEVM rollup, on centralized exchanges or on the Ethereum blockchain, they will need to take different steps, which Polygon details in their blog post.
As part of the migration, Polygon tested the token upgrade on July 17 in a testnet environment, to identify or fix any issues before POL officially goes live on mainnet.
