A cryptocurrency trader is said to have turned a modest $27 investment in the memecoin Pepe (PEPE) into an extraordinary profit of $52 million, according to a report from blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain.

Anonymous Pepe trader achieved astonishing profits, as Lookonchain revealed in a post on X on December 14.

"A $PEPE whale, after being dormant for 600 days, transferred the entire 2.1 trillion $PEPE (worth $52 million) to a new address... From $27 to $52 million — an extraordinary profit of 1,900,000 times!"

Despite having no intrinsic value, memecoins have created countless new millionaires in the crypto market. In May, another savvy trader turned $3,000 into $46 million while trading Pepe, achieving a profit of over 15,700 times.

Pepe has risen 1,600% year-to-date, becoming the second-best performing token in 2024.

Memecoins have proven to be one of the best-performing cryptocurrencies of the year based on their profits. Year-to-date, Pepe has increased by over 1,600%, becoming the second-best performing coin in the top 100 cryptocurrencies. Following it is the memecoin Dogwifhat (WIF) based on the Solana platform, which increased by 1,400%, ranking third.

However, the governance coin Mantra (OM) has outperformed all meme coins, soaring over 16,600% in 2024, according to data from Cryptobubbles.

Although technical analysis is often inaccurate for meme coins, some cryptocurrency traders predict that Pepe will continue to rise. Pepe could become the Dogecoin of the current bull run, making it the 'king of this cycle,' according to Max Schwartzman, CEO of Because Bitcoin.

The continued success of meme coins can be seen as a symptom of the younger generation's disappointment with the current financial system, according to Hao Yang, financial product director at Bybit.

"The success of meme coins can be likened to punk rock, a symptom of frustrated young investors who have seen opportunities their parents didn’t have," Yang shared.

However, trading meme coins always brings significant volatility. During the liquidation of the $1.7 billion cryptocurrency market on December 10, some of the top meme coins became the worst-performing tokens.
