🚨 SOPH FUNDING AT -877% ANNUALIZED
Shorts in Sophon are paying longs at an extreme pace. Hyperliquid shows
$SOPH perpetual funding at -877% annualized today, and OKX confirms the same direction at -236%. When two venues agree this hard, it is a crowded trade meeting a dying chain.
📊 WHAT IS HAPPENING
Sophon announced on Oct 20 that its standalone Ethereum Layer 2 shuts down permanently on Nov 30, 2026, after $3M+ in annual overhead made the chain uneconomic despite roughly $70M raised. Holders must bridge liquid SOPH, ETH and USDC off by Nov 25 or risk permanent loss. Upbit ends all SOPH trading on Nov 16, citing low liquidity and weak activity (Upbit notice, via BitRss Oct 29). The token sits over 98% below its May 2025 peak above $0.11 and hit a fresh low of $0.001623 after the shutdown news (Bitcoin News, Oct 20).
Negative funding means shorts pay longs, so the -877% print says shorts are piled in and paying heavily to stay there. But the distinction matters: deeply negative funding is not the same as a guaranteed short squeeze. Crowded shorts can stay crowded while a token grinds lower, especially when the exit doors have dates on them.
My take: this is not just one token in distress. It is what a chain sunset does to market structure in real time. The chain closes Nov 30, the biggest Korean venue exits Nov 16, and the bridge deadline lands Nov 25, so everyone is trading against the same calendar, not just a chart.
🟢 Squeeze path: shorts rush to cover ahead of Nov 16 and Nov 25, and thin liquidity turns exits into a sharp bounce.
🔴 Grind path: holders keep leaving through the bridge window, liquidity thins further, and funding stays deeply negative without any squeeze.
📌 WHAT TO WATCH
Nov 16: Upbit trading ends 15:00 KST
Nov 25: bridge deadline, assets left onchain risk permanent loss
Nov 30: Sophon mainnet shutdown
Meanwhile
$BTC trades near $78,090, up 0.85% in 24h, and fear and greed sits at 34 (Fear).
Is SOPH a squeeze waiting for a deadline, or a wind-down trade with no floor left? 🐂🐻
