CoinEx announced it is shutting down, and social media is already calling it “the next FTX.”
I went through both the announcement itself and the market reaction.
First, the conclusion: this looks like a controllable event, not the next systemic crisis—but “controllable” doesn’t mean there’s no risk. The key is whether withdrawals can be completed cleanly.
The announcement is structured in a fairly orderly way: it sets a withdrawal window, changes futures to only reduce positions, shuts down in phases, and repurchases CET at a fixed price. This isn’t an abrupt freeze-and-run architecture; it’s a planned exit process.
But a well-designed process doesn’t guarantee it can be carried out. The claim that the reserve ratio is over 100% doesn’t prove liabilities were calculated correctly, that assets are truly liquid, or that withdrawals under pressure can actually run smoothly. The numbers on the reserves page and the money that actually arrives are two different things.
The online debate is intense—196 quotes and 88 reposts suggest people are arguing, not just echoing. There are three camps of views: “another exchange blows up,” “a dignified exit under compliance,” and “CET holders are going to be liquidated.”
Just because the noise is loud doesn’t mean the judgment is right. The “next FTX” framing doesn’t hold up at the moment—unless withdrawals really get stuck, assets are genuinely discounted, and custody/settlement processes truly run into trouble, then the claim would carry weight. Likewise, the “100% reserves, so it’s safe” argument also doesn’t stand. A reserves statement isn’t an audit.
What’s really being hurt are CET, CoinEx’s own liquidity, CSC, and the few other assets tied to it—not major assets like Bitcoin that would be directly dragged down, unless the withdrawal process actually collapses and the issue propagates.
The CET buyback price of 0.005 USDT is a reference clearing price, not a value floor.
Next, the signals to watch are simple: whether withdrawals can be completed smoothly. Everything else is just noise.
