What Is a Token?

A token is a digital unit of value recorded on a blockchain that represents an asset, utility, or access right within a specific ecosystem. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, tokens are typically created on existing blockchains rather than having their own native chain.
Tokens can serve multiple purposes depending on how they are designed. Some function as mediums of exchange within a platform, while others represent ownership in real-world assets (RWAs) or grant holders access to specific services. Because tokens exist as registry entries on a blockchain, their ownership and transfer records are maintained by the underlying network rather than a central authority.

Token Standards and Networks

Most tokens are issued on top of existing third-party blockchains rather than requiring their own. The Ethereum blockchain is one of the most common platforms for token creation, in part due to its support for standardized token formats. The ERC-20 standard, for example, defines a set of rules that tokens on Ethereum must follow, making it easier for developers to create and manage tokens that work with wallets, exchanges, and other applications.
Tokens can also be issued on other blockchains that support smart contracts, including BNB Chain, Solana, and Polygon. The choice of blockchain typically affects transaction speed, cost, and compatibility with different platforms.

Token Classification

Utility tokens and security tokens

Tokens are often classified by their functionality. Utility tokens generally provide access to a service or function as a medium of exchange within an ecosystem. For example, BNB acts primarily as a discount token for trading fees on the Binance exchange, but it can also be used to pay for goods and services.
Security tokens, on the other hand, represent financial assets. A company could issue tokenized shares, granting the holder ownership rights and potential dividends. From a legal standpoint, these may be identical to traditionally distributed shares.

Fungible and non-fungible tokens

Another classification distinguishes between fungible and non-fungible tokens. Fungible tokens are interchangeable: one unit holds the same value as another, much like a dollar bill. BNB is an example of a fungible token, as each unit is equivalent to any other unit.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), by contrast, are unique. Each NFT has distinct properties that make it non-interchangeable with other tokens. Digital art, collectibles, and in-game items are common use cases for non-fungible tokens.

Why Tokens Matter

Tokens enable projects to raise capital, build communities, and create incentive structures within their ecosystems. They allow developers to represent digital or physical assets on a blockchain in a way that is verifiable and transferable. Some tokens may also be redeemable for off-chain assets, such as gold, property, or stocks.

As the blockchain ecosystem has evolved, tokens have become a fundamental building block for decentralized applications (DApps), governance systems, and digital ownership models.
