What Is an EIP?

EIP stands for Ethereum Improvement Proposal. It is a formal document that describes a proposed change to the Ethereum network, including protocol upgrades, application standards, and process guidelines.

EIPs allow anyone in the Ethereum community to suggest improvements to the network. Each proposal goes through a structured review process where developers and community members evaluate the idea before it can be implemented. This system helps Ethereum evolve in a transparent and organized way.

Types of EIPs

EIPs are categorized based on the scope of the proposed change. The main types include:

  • Core: Changes to the Ethereum consensus layer or core protocol, such as block structure or transaction processing rules.
  • Networking: Updates to network-level rules, including peer discovery and client communication.
  • ERC (Ethereum Request for Comments): Standards for smart contracts and applications, such as token interfaces. For example, ERC-20 defines the standard for fungible tokens.
  • Interface: Changes to how applications and tools interact with Ethereum through APIs like JSON-RPC.
  • Meta: Proposals about the EIP process itself, covering guidelines and conventions.
Notable EIPs include EIP-1559, which reformed Ethereum fee mechanics, and EIP-4844, also known as proto-danksharding. EIP-4844 was part of the Cancun Upgrade and introduced blob-carrying transactions to improve scalability and reduce costs.

How EIPs Work

The EIP process follows several stages to ensure proposals are thoroughly reviewed before implementation:

  • Draft: The author writes the initial proposal and submits it to the EIP repository.
  • Review: The community and core developers discuss the proposal and suggest changes.
  • Last Call: A final window for objections before the proposal is finalized.
  • Final: The EIP is accepted and may be implemented in a client release or network upgrade.

Proposals can also be marked as “Stagnant” if inactive, “Withdrawn” if rejected by the author, or “Obsolete" if superseded by a newer proposal. This lifecycle helps maintain quality and prevents outdated ideas from lingering in the ecosystem.
