October 12: ETFs just posted their worst weekly report, but the market voted with short liquidations
The biggest driver today was “institutions are selling, while shorts are getting carried out.” ETFs just reported an ugly week: BTC and ETH spot ETFs saw combined net outflows of $1.22 billion last week. BTC ended its three-week inflow streak, while ETH posted its ninth consecutive week of outflows, shedding $540 million in a single week. BlackRock’s ETHA alone accounted for 88% of that. But BTC saw $21.1 million flow back in on Friday, so the peak of panic may have passed. Across the market, $66 million in positions were liquidated today, 65% of them shorts: $15.57 million in ETH shorts were squeezed, along with $7.17 million in ZEC shorts. A $3.25 million ZEC short was also forcibly closed on Binance. That’s the whole story behind tonight’s modest rebound.
Risk appetite: neutral to mildly warm. The Fear & Greed Index rebounded from 61 to 69 (Greed), and leverage overall isn’t particularly crowded. A short-covering rally suggests that buyers are willing to step in after the deep drop, but nobody dares chase prices higher. A real risk-on move will have to wait for Wednesday’s CPI.
BTC: $83,286 (24h +0.26%). It spent the day hovering around $83,000; until it holds above $83,000, expect more range-bound trading.
ETH: $2,542 (24h +1.52%). The rebound is stronger than BTC’s, but the selling pressure from nine consecutive weeks of outflows hasn’t let up. Let’s see how it fares above $2,550.
Altcoin pulse: Today’s theme is “coins with a narrative keep moving; those without one depend on market sentiment.”
- $
$NEAR 5.63 (+6.08%), the strongest performer among the top 30 by market cap today. A handoff of inflows to Bitwise’s NEAR spot ETF, the deflationary narrative, and cross-chain volume delivered a triple boost. The message is clear: this is an independent rally.
- $
$ZEC 1,288 (+4.63%). ZEC shorts were the most brutally liquidated across the market today. Shorts refused to learn their lesson after the privacy upgrade went live on testnet, and got burned again.
- $
$LINK 13.29 (+2.78%). It held its ground after new CCIP features launched, but the $94.3 million in LINK transferred to Binance on October 9 hasn’t been fully absorbed. Check how the market handles that supply before chasing higher.
- SOL: $110.8 (+1.2%). It joined the rebound, but SOL spot ETFs also ended their 14-week inflow streak, so institutions aren’t giving it any extra credit for now.
- DOGE +1.82%, rising purely on sentiment. Its trading volume was only a third of NEAR’s, making it a supporting player in this rotation.
Logic: Today, only ZEC remained standing among the privacy twins, while XMR actually fell 0.44%. That shows rotation timing matters more than sector labels. Money is paying for “real ETF inflows and upgrades going live,” while older L1s remain at the mercy of the broader market.
My take: My view is that this isn’t a reversal, but a technical recovery driven by “the decline has run out of steam + too many shorts.” The structural rotation hasn’t changed: NEAR has real ETF inflows, ZEC has an upgrade going live plus short fuel, and LINK has solid fundamentals but overhead selling pressure. Until BTC finds direction around $83,000, altcoins are all about individual stories—don’t mistake this for altseason. Wednesday’s CPI (forecast: 3.7%) is the real make-or-break moment: a hot reading will snuff out this rebound, while a cool one could give it room to continue. Until the data is out, watch more and trade less.
What to watch tomorrow: ① Can BTC hold above $83,000? If it can’t, the rebound could end at any moment. ② Don’t make a heavily leveraged directional bet ahead of Wednesday’s CPI; options also expire on Friday.
