A security breach has been experienced at Unleash Protocol, an intellectual property finance platform built on Story's ecosystem, with PeckShield, a blockchain security firm, confirming that around $3.9 million has been lost as a result. Investigations observed that this particular breach resulted from a governance bug through which an adversary acquired unauthorized admin access to the Unleash Protocol smart contracts.
Researchers have revealed that the attacker took advantage of the multisignature governance system found in Unleash to validate an unauthorized contract upgrade, which made it feasible for the attacker to make withdrawals without going through mainstream governance processes. The affected assets include WIP, USDC, WETH, stIP.
After the withdrawal of funds, the hacker relayed the funds to Ethereum and laundered the 1,337.1 ETH in the privacy mixer Tornado Cash. Both the platforms and the on-chain analysis service, LookonChain, pointed to the issue not being in Story Protocol but in the governance mechanism of the vulnerable application, Unleash.
