$TXN rose 3.865% over the past 24 hours, with the price reaching 269.03. Old Dog took a look at the derivatives data: the funding rate was completely unchanged, sitting at zero. Price moved, funding didn’t — that combination is interesting.
This kind of move looks like spot leading on its own. Funding rate at zero means neither longs nor shorts are currently paying the other side; leveraged positions have not formed any clear consensus. Looking at open interest, the OI is 1304.53. Compared with more than 640,000 in 24-hour volume, the open-interest share is extremely low. In plain terms, the upward push now is probably not being driven by leveraged longs stacking up in perpetual futures; it looks more like spot buying is pushing it higher on its own. When a traditional stock-linked asset on-chain decouples like this, my read is that capital is playing two different games: on one side, traditional accounts or spot ETF channels are buying
$TXN with a U.S. equities mindset; on the other, derivatives traders are watching from the sidelines, or not really levering up at all. A zero funding rate is a very clean state: there’s neither the risk of crowded longs leading to a brake, nor the fuel of shorts getting squeezed.
What is the strongest counterargument? That this rally is being led by a powerful traditional allocation force that does not show up in our data, such as a large fund building a position based on fundamentals. They simply do not care about a few basis points of on-chain funding cost. In that scenario, spot keeps accumulating, while OI and funding in the derivatives market can remain disconnected for a long time. The second-order effect is that if spot buying continues, the derivatives market’s low-OI state will not last forever. Once price holds above a key level, derivatives traders will be forced in: either chasing higher to open longs and push funding up, or opening shorts to provide the other side. In the end, the cost will be borne by the leveraged traders who react too slowly.
My move is very clear: wait and watch. If you chase spot now, you have to believe that the invisible traditional capital will keep buying. But zero funding plus low open interest makes it feel like the market lacks consensus, and I won’t make a heavy bet at this level. The invalidation condition is simple: if
$TXN ’s funding rate turns positive and OI rises sharply in sync with price, that would mean leveraged longs have finally joined in and the market structure has changed. I would reassess then. Until that happens, I’m waiting.
