ยซJust donโt fallโ I havenโt sold the spot yet.
And can my short even turn a profit?ยป
In one sentenceโ a very familiar trap.
Looking at the card, the author shorts about 90 ETH:
โ entry: $2,149.53;
โ current price: $2,405.19;
โ move against the position: +11.89%;
โ unrealized PnL: โ$23,009.
But the spot changes the whole meaning of this story.
Spot ETH Short ETH Final price sensitivity
more than 90 ETH 90 ETH portfolio still in long
about 90 ETH 90 ETH almost neutral to price
less than 90 ETH 90 ETH portfolio remains in short
If the author really holds around 90 ETH on spot, then the rise in ETH could have offset almost all of the shortโs loss. Then the question isnโt โwhen will the short get back to zero?โ, but โwhy was this short opened in the first place?โ
A hedge is not a trade that is supposed to be profitable by itself. Its job is to reduce the risk of the entire portfolio.
And if the short was a standalone bet against ETH, then โget to breakeven and runโ is no longer a risk planโitโs just hope.
In situations like this, do you calculate each tradeโs PnL separately with hashtags, or do you look at the entire portfolio first?
