Americans vote today. The whole House, a third of the Senate. Here is what elections do and do not do to markets, with no opinion on who should win.
1. Markets price certainty, not parties. The nervous period is the weeks before, when nobody knows. Once the result is clear, even a result the market "did not want" usually trades better than the waiting did.
2. History is kinder than the headlines. The S&P 500 has risen in the twelve months after every midterm election since 1950. Not because of any party. Because the uncertainty ends and the economy keeps going.
3. Split government is often fine for markets. When no side controls everything, fewer big laws pass, and markets like fewer surprises.
4. The crypto angle is real but slow. Rules for exchanges, stablecoins and taxes are written by committees, and committee chairs change with majorities. It shows up over quarters, not on election night.
5. The one thing to do: nothing new. Tonight is the most expensive night of the year to be leveraged on a guess. The plan you wrote in a calm month is the plan.
I will be watching, not trading. Which way do you think the market reacts tomorrow, up, down, or shrug?
Education only, not financial advice.
