🇷🇺 Russia’s Digital Ruble Enters Large-Scale Rollout

Russia is set to begin the large-scale rollout of its digital ruble on September 1, 2026, marking a major expansion of the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) program. The Bank of Russia says major banks will initially be required to provide customers with digital-ruble services, while the rollout to other banks will happen in stages through 2028.
The digital ruble is not a cryptocurrency. It is a digital form of Russia’s national currency, issued by the central bank and designed to operate alongside traditional cash and bank-account rubles.
At the first stage, customers will be able to use participating banks to open digital-ruble accounts, transfer funds and make payments. Large retailers will also be required to accept digital-ruble payments, with smaller businesses joining the system in later phases.
The move could significantly change Russia’s payment infrastructure by expanding digital payments and giving the central bank a new platform for transactions. It also places Russia among the countries pursuing large-scale CBDC adoption, making the rollout an important development for the global digital-finance sector.
